Assignment and Ownership for Controls, Tests, and Policies

To split work across your team, you can assign owners to controls, tests, and policies in SecureSlate. Once an owner is assigned, they receive an email notification so they know they are responsible for that item. This keeps accountability clear and helps you stay on top of compliance tasks.

Where you can assign owners

SecureSlate supports ownership in these areas:

  • Controls — On the Controls page, each control can have an owner responsible for its implementation and evidence.
  • Tests — On the Tests page, each test can have an owner who is responsible for making sure the test passes or evidence is provided.
  • Policies — When you create or manage policies (including custom policies), you can set an owner. Policy-related tests also allow ownership so the same person can own both the policy and the test that verifies it.

You can assign any user in your SecureSlate account as an owner, not only admins. Non-admin users will see a focused view of the items assigned to them.

How to assign an owner

  1. Open the relevant page (Controls, Tests, or Policies / Policy Library).
  2. Locate the control, test, or policy you want to assign.
  3. In the Owner column (or the owner field in the item’s drawer), click the current owner’s name or the owner icon.
  4. Choose a user from the dropdown to set them as the owner.
  5. Save or confirm the change.

Once saved, the new owner receives an email notification that they have been assigned ownership of that control, test, or policy.

Finding unassigned or assigned items

Use the filter on each page to:

  • See items that have no owner (unassigned), so you can assign them.
  • See items assigned to a specific person, so you can review workload or reassign.

Keeping owners set on every in-scope control, test, and policy helps your team and auditors see who is accountable.

Notifications for owners

  • When you assign someone as owner, they receive an email notification about the new assignment.
  • Owners are the primary point of contact for that item (e.g. fixing a failing test, updating a policy, or providing control evidence).
  • You can configure additional notification preferences in your account or workspace settings so owners stay informed without being overwhelmed.

Best practices

  • Assign an owner to every control, test, and policy that is in scope for your audit or framework.
  • Use filters regularly to find unassigned items and assign owners before reviews or audits.
  • Ensure owners understand they will receive email when assigned and are responsible for keeping the item in a compliant state.
